11-11 Sailing the Pacific

This post is based primarily on Don's notes, occasionally supplemented with MT's notes from our cruise in November-December 2023. When information from other sources is added—for further explanation to readers or to satisfy our own curiosity—that is set off in a text box (as this one).
Most of the photos that accompany this post are from Don’s camera (with a caption indicating the time it was taken); those from MT’s iPhone are indicated by “MT” placed at the beginning of the photo caption. Photos from any other source (such as the public domain Wikimedia Commons), occasionally used for clarification, indicate that source in the caption.

The Viking Daily newsletter showed today's weather forecast as "Sunny, 62° F" and "Sunrise: 6:34 AM."

We got up at 6:00 am.

MT Saturday, November 11, ‎2023, 6:01 AM - Viking Star: Sunrise over Pacific.

This morning, the ship was rocking in the waves.

Room service breakfast arrived between 7:00 and 7:17, as ordered.

We walked on the Deck 2 track ca. 9:30-10:30, with strong wind and rocking ship.

At 11:30, we went to Chef's Table (Deck 1) to begin the Ship's Tour.

At 1:30, we went to the World Café (Deck 7) for lunch. We had cobb salad with shrimp and chicken.

At 2:30, we went to the Star Theater (Deck 2) for the Guest Lecture  on "Moving Continents and Shrinking Seas," about plate tectonics

MT Saturday, November 11, ‎2023, 2:30 PM - Viking Star: screen in Theater, starting the Moving Continents and Shrinking Seas presentation.

At 4:15, we went back to the Star Theater for the Port Talk: Hilo.

Although Hilo, Hawai'i would be our first stop after 5 days at sea, having the Port Talk today was too far ahead of our arrival there for us to remember the information. The same thing happened twice more when we had multiple days at sea. At the end of the cruise, we would complain about this on our comment sheet.

At 6:00, we went to The Restaurant  (Deck 2) for our pre-ordered dinners. We both got Poached Salmon and steamed vegetables, and Don had a Fruit Plate.

Before retiring, Don set the time back 1 hour on his watch and his camera, as directed in the Viking Daily newsletter, accompanied by a reminder card.
